When advertisements for wire cutters are popping up from my browser, I know I'm not the only one who has been using my laptop lately. |

| [ | mood |
| | cautiously optimistic | ] | I'm about to start a string of experiments that actually have a decent chance of producing some good data. And by good data, I mean data that gets me closer to publication and graduation. This is the first time I've actually been optimistic about my research in over a year and I had almost forgotten what it feels like. |

| Fish Tacos |
[Feb. 5th, 2007|06:54 pm] |
|
I think I've lived in California too long. I am regularly choosing fish tacos over chicken or beef. They are so tasty. Why would anyone want anything else? I think there used to be a time when I found fish tacos odd but now I can't imagine why I would think that. |

I knew I was in trouble when I asked a coworker for help with an experiment that was giving me trouble and her advice began with, "you see, these experiments are like the different levels of hell." But she did have some good advice and I think I've managed to climb to the next level. |

My boss just left to go get us some cake. For no particular reason other than that he wants some cake.
It's times like this that I'm so happy I chose this lab. |

| Fruit Flies |
[Sep. 1st, 2006|12:02 pm] |

I don't like fruit flies. Granted, their first appearance was admittedly our fault. We did leave out that empty yogurt container. I can even understand their fascination with the bananas. They are, after all, fruit flies. But swarming around our toothbrushes? That's a little below the belt if you ask me. |

I'm tired of my experiments not working. I know science is like that and experiments rarely work on the first try, but mine don't ever seem to work. Blah. Blah is what I say to science. |

"It is a fearful thing to love what death can touch." -Unknown
I heard this in the context of a story on NPR, This American Life about a couple who had been married for over 50 years and died 36 hours apart. The quote was put on their tombstone. It was a touching story, much more optimistic and uplifting than the quote by itself. |

You weren't offered M&Ms. You were offered trail mix. I know the M&Ms are your favorite part. They are everyone's favorite part. So leave some for the rest of us! |

| Fun Fact |
[Jun. 30th, 2006|10:46 am] |
Did you know that 7-Eleven originated as an ice house in Texas? In addition to selling ice, an employee came up with the idea of selling milk and bread. This was convenient for customers since the ice house was open during more hours than the grocery store. During the summer, the ice house was open from 7am to 11pm, hence the name. A fun little fact, courtesy of NPR Morning Edition.
Also, wikipedia pointed out that the 7-Eleven logo has all capital letters except the "n." So it reads 7 ELEVEn. I wonder what the story is behind that one. |

| | centrifuge spinning | ] | I love Jamba Juice. I've been working in another lab recently, and their schedule pushes my lunchtime back to 1:30 or 2. I usually don't eat breakfast but I just can't go that long without some form of food, especially when I need steady hands for poking electrodes into tiny brain slices. Luckily for me, UCLA recently acquired a Jamba Juice on campus. Now I have a tasty, convenient, nutritious breakfast. I know I could make my own smoothies at home, but let's be honest, I'm just too lazy. Yum, Yum. |

| Stalking |
[Jun. 8th, 2006|03:00 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | frustrated | ] | Have you ever been told by someone that you need to stalk someone? That is essentially what our collaborating professor told me today. For over 6 months we've been trying to get him to help us with some electrophysiology experiments. All promises, no action. Now, in an effort to speed things up, I'm supposed to learn the technique myself from him. But the man is incapable of committing to an appointment, and he doesn't respond to emails or voice mails. So he told me to just come find him, starting Monday. I interpret this as hang around long enough and you might happen to be there when I'm free to teach you something. Great. That's exactly how I wanted to spend my summer.
I hate science. |

It's one thing to see a beating heart on the Discovery channel. It's something entirely different to see your own heart beating in a sonogram displayed on the monitor next to you. Very cool and somewhat scary/eerie at the same time. |

| Grand Canyon |
[Mar. 28th, 2006|02:20 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | pleased | ] | This past weekend, I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time. As expected, it was very cool. I much preferred viewing the canyon while hiking on the rim trail, especially the more rugged unpaved parts, rather than looking over from the railed overlook points. I think it takes some time to really absorb the immensity of the canyon; something that is hard to do in 15 minutes at an overlook point. On the contrary, hiking the paths made me feel more a part of the scenery instead of an observer. I would be paying attention to my feet to avoid tripping (very important when you are a few feet away from a sharp drop-off) but then I would look up and be stricken again by the beauty. Also, there was the exhilarating feeling of being, quite literally, close to the edge.
As a side note, I bought a book there called Death in Grand Canyon that describes the history of fatalities in Grand Canyon National Park. Yes, its somewhat morbid but the authors approach the subject with the intent to educate and help prevent future accidents. I've only read the first chapter but it's already very interesting. I would recommend it if that sort of thing interests you. |
